Amanda Farrell: Peace is one of the most important human rights. Without it, a society cannot function properly. Wars and other violence always interfere with people's lives. War prevents children in certain areas of the world from living past the age of two. Doesn't everyone have the right to live? With peace, this right would be protected. People could live life to their fullest potentially, be happier, and explore all the opportunities out there for them. However, for now, peace is a thing of the imagination. Terrorists continue to cause fear in people and nations continue to fight to destruction over land and other things. These conflicts prevent this human right from being implemented and destroys all potential harmony. So far in history, there has never been a time without war or without some kind of conflict. When one is resolved, another begins. For now, all we can do is try to help the people who are in the midst of these wars/conflicts as much as we can.
This is where organisations like http://www.un.org/en/peacekeeping/ come in. For years, the UN has sent peace keepers to help the people of countries in the midst of conflicts. Peace keepers try their best to feed the people and protect them from certain dangers. With every new conflict, there is a challenge and the peace keepers find a way to deal with that. This site http://www.peaceandhumanrights.org/ advocates that peace can only be created by joining hands and making a difference. This is what we all need to do. It is only by working together that we can begin to strive for peace. Organisations like UNESCO, http://portal.unesco.org/shs/en/ev.php-URL_ID=1827&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=201.html , advocate for a variety of human rights. Peace is include and UNESCO expresses its belief that it is the duty of governments to help secure peace for its citizens. UNESCO has helped many people become more aware of the need for peace and how to achieve it. Introduction

What is Peace? Why is it important?

The definition of this human right is that a society can live in harmony with itself and other societies around it. This human right is important and crucial to a functioning community, but coincidentally is also the hardest to obtain. War and terrorism make it hard for this human right to be implemented into governments around the world, and then these governments do not correspond well with each other, therefore creating wars and destruction. All other human rights are also directly associated with this human right. With no education, natural resources, or public health, it is hard to keep a stable lifestyle and difficult to maintain a peaceful mind which would prevent wars and create peace. (Lidia Henderson)

What can/ is being done?

There are and have always been many organizations and leaders who try to carry out world peace. For example, the United Nations
is an organization consisting of leaders from all countries around the world who work together
  • To bring together all relevant actors to marshal resources and to advise on the proposed integrated strategies for post conflict peacebuilding and recover;
  • To help ensure predictable financing for early recovery activities and sustained financial investment over the medium to long-term;
  • To develop best practices on issues in collaboration with political, security, humanitarian and development actors (United Nations Peacebuilding Commisions page).
Other organizations are United For Peace, The United States Institute for Peace, The Carter Center, , and The Toda Institute. (Lidia Henderson)

(Ian Burwasser) The dictionary states that peace is the normal, nonwarring condition of a nation, group of nations, or the world. The word normal is extremely important in this definition because it demonstrates that living without fear of terror or attack by an enemy should be what is considered normal in this world. However, in far too many countries this is not the norm at all. People live in fear of being killed in their homes, their offices, and on their trains and planes. Far too often, wars are fought because older people teach younger people that their particular religion or culture is the best and should be spread. Those who do not believe as they do can be killed in the name of their religion or culture. Still others believe that it is okay to preserve their way of life, killing for oil, or land, or money. It is clearly in the hands of younger people to get past what they have been taught. They need to meet one another, preferably in person, or if not via skype or ichat, and learn about one another. Once they get to know each other, it will be more difficult for them to fight one another. It is hard to murder someone who has become a friend rather than a faceless enemy.
